Day 3: Butare - Transfer to Nyungwe Forest NP

Nyungwe National Park is the largest block of montane forest in East and Central Africa. A uniquely rich centre of floral diversity, the forest has more than 200 different types of tree, and a myriad of flowering plants including the other-worldly giant lobelia and a host of colourful orchids.

Nyungwe is most alluring for its primates: 13 species in all, including humankind’s closest living relative, the chimpanzee, as well as the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey and hundred-strong troops of the delightfully acrobatic Angola colobus.

The most important ornithological site in Rwanda, Nyungwe harbors almost 300 bird species of which two dozen are restricted to a handful of montane forests on the Albertine Rift. Here you will visit the black and white colobus monkeys.

A highlight of this visit is the 200 m canopy walkway which is suspended 60m above the forest floor. Apart from a wonderful aerial view of the trees, you will also enjoy the sights of the fantastic birds that fly across as you enjoy the walk. It was opened in 2010 and is the only one of its kind in east Africa and one of only three on the African continent. This canopy walkway also gives a unique face to face meeting with the butterflies, birds and monkeys.
