UGANDA REPTILE AND GORILLA EXPEDITION –17 DAYS.

This is a program/safari for individuals interested in discovering the Reptiles and their areas of adaptation in Uganda. It can be organized both as camping or accommodation in Lodges to view the beauty and nature of western Uganda. It involves many activities including searching for Chameleons & snakes, chimp trekking, forest walks, Gorilla trekking, game viewing.

 This safari can be organized with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 10 participants.

 We can also organise and revise it according to your interests.

Trip summary:

Day 01: Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

Day 02: Siza Forest and reptile sanctuary - Uganda Wildlife Education centre

Day 03: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – visit the top of the falls.

Day 04: Murchison Falls - Game drive – Boat trip.

Day 05: Murchison Falls - Transfer to Kibale National Park

Day 06: Chimp Trekking – transfer to Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 07: Hike from Nyakalengija (1.646 m) - Up to Nyabitaba Hut (2.652 m)

Day 08: Nyabitaba walk back to the camp – Overnight Nyakalengija Campsite

Day 09: Nyakalegija - Transfer to Mweya – Visit the CTPH and Equator.

Day 10: Game viewing – Boat Trip on Kazinga Channel.

Day 11: Game drives – Maramagambo – Transfer to Ishasha.

Day 12: Game viewing – transfer to Bwindi.

Day 13: Optional Gorilla trekking or bird watching.

Day 14: Forest walk – visit Buhoma School and medical centre.

Day 15: Transfer to Lake Mburo – Boat Trip.

Day 16: Nature walk – transfer to Kampala

Day 17: Departure. Optional visit to Kampala if afternoon or evening flight

What is included on this trip?

Airport transfers, camping or lodging accommodation, all meals, mineral water, the services of a Driver-Guide and the logistics team, all park and entry fees, all activities as per the itinerary: Game drives in MFNP, boat trip to the falls, bird watching in MFNP, chimp trekking at Kibale, hiking Rwenzori mountain, searching for chameleons and snake, game drives at Mweya, boat trip on the Kazinga channel, visit of Kasenyi fishing village, game drives in Ishasha, gorilla trekking (each gorilla merit is at $ 500. It is charged separately by Uganda Wildlife Authority and should be booked 6 months in advance), forest walk in Bwindi, game drives in Lake Mburo NP and Kampala visit.

What is excluded in this trip?

Personal expenses, visas, flight charges, all drinks except Mineral Water and other personal expenditures like tips and donations. Optional bird watching in Bwindi and Gorilla trekking permit,

What to bring on safari?

Clothes that are friendly to wildlife observation, good walking shoes, hiking sticks, a few long-sleeve shirts, slippers, a sweater for cool evenings, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sun cream, video/photo camera i.e. longer telelens is very useful, reserve batteries, films, binoculars and a torch for dark nights.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

On arrival at Entebbe airport you will be received by AJ tours and travel team. Here you will be transferred to Nabinonya beach for an overnight or to your hotel. If you arrive in the morning, you may choose an activity/ day excursion that you will do outside the safari plan. This will enable you to keep busy that whole day before the safari departure on the following day.

Activities/ day excursion that you can choose include; a visit to Ngamba Island (Chimp sanctuary), visit the Botanical Gardens (bird watching), visit to Mabira Forest reserve (Nature walk and birding).

Camping accommodation : Nabinonya Campsite.

Lodge Accommodation : Sophie's Motel.

Day 2: Visit Siza Forest and Reptile Sanctuary – visit the Uganda Wildlife Education centre.

After breakfast, you will be picked from Sophie's Motel to visit the Siza Forest and Reptile sanctuary. After Lunch you, you will visit Entebbe Wildlife Education Centre.

Activity : Reptile viewing, and animals.

Camping accommodation : Nabinonya Campsite.

Lodge Accommodation : Sophie's Motel.

Day 3: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park.

After an early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Murchison Falls NP. You will have a picnic lunch on the way to the park. While on your way to Murchison you will visit the Top of the falls before checking in to your accommodation.

Activity : Visit the top of the Falls, Road transfer.

Camping accommodation : Red Chilli Campsite.

Lodge Accommodation : Red Chilli bandas.

Day 4: Murchison Falls

After an early morning breakfast, you have a full morning of spectacular game viewing! The best area for game-viewing on the north bank is the peninsula between the Victoria and the Albert Niles. It's known for abundant wildlife like giraffes, large herds of buffalo and elephants. The afternoon will be spent on an extensive exploration by boat on the Nile river, upstream towards the Falls. Here you will admire on the slopes of the Nile river, the big number of hippos, elephants and the Nile crocodiles. Especially January and February are very rewarding for Nile crocodiles since this is the breeding season. The launch trip is a unique adventure, full of activity and constant surprises! Bird watchers will appreciate the rich bird life. The Red-throated bee-eaters breed in large colonies along the Nile during January up to March.

Day 5: Murchison Falls – Transfer to Kibale NP

After breakfast, we shall all travel to Kibale National park via Hoima with a stop over at Fort Portal town. You will have a picnic lunch on the way to Kibale. Overnight will be at Kibale Forest – Kanyanchu Bandas.

Activities: Road transfer accompanied by scenery viewing and people.

Camping accommodation : Kanyanchu campsite.

Lodge Accommodation : Kanyanchu camp Bandas.

Day 6: Chimp trekking – Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains.

After breakfast you will depart to the forest searching for Chimpanzees. Here your guides will brief you of all the activities to be done in the forest. The forest is a paradise of many species of birds, chimps, Baboons and white Colobus monkeys. After Chimp trekking you return to the camp for lunch. After lunch you will be transferred to Mountain Rwenzori. Overnight is foreseen at Mount Rwenzori Nyakalengija Campsite.

Activity: Chimp trekking, bird watching and other small primates, natures walk

Day 7: Hike from Nyakalengija (1.646 m) - Up to Nyabitaba hut (2.652 m)

After breakfast you will have a short drive to offices of the Rwenzori Mountains NP and the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) at Nyakalengija. Time in the morning will be to rent equipment and be availed with guides and porters. Your hiking trip begins from the park headquarters at 1,646 m, walking past typical "mud and wattle" Bakonzo homes and gradually moving upward through elephant grass and garden plots. It takes approximately forty minutes to reach the park boundary.

The trail then follows the Mubuku River, crossing recent landslide areas. It involves climbing over rocks and bluff, before reaching the Mahoma River in 2h30. After crossing the river there will be a steep climbing through open bracken fern slopes and Podorcarpus Forest up to Nyabitaba hut (2652 m). The Nyabitaba hut is set on a ridge above the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers with views over the Portal Peaks which rise above 4,627 m. While trekking you will keenly be able to see the chameleons (Rwenzori three-horned chameleons), butterflies, snakes, amphibians and other primate species like black and white colobus monkeys, Angola colobus. There are also unique birds which include Olive Pigeon, Rwenzori Touraco, White necked Raven and the handsome Francolin.

Activity: Hiking to Nyabitaba Hut, bird watching, reptile searching and other small primates.

Camping accommodation : Nyabitaba Hut.

Day 8: Nyabitaba - back to Nyakalengija – Overnight at the campsite.

After breakfast, you will go once again searching for chameleons and other reptiles as we descend back to Nyakalengija. Overnight will be foreseen at Nyakalegija Campsite.

Activity: Bird watching and other small primates, natures walk

Day 9 – Nyakalegija – Transfer to Mweya – Queen Elizabeth NP.

After Breakfast, you will be transfered to Mweya - Queen Elizabeth NP via Kabatoro gate. On your way to Mweya, you will make a stop over at the Equator and the Conservation through Public Health (CTPH) telecentre. In the evening, you go for the game drive. Overnight and dinner is foreseen at Mweya campsite.

Activity: Road transfer, visiting the Equator and CTPH.

Lodge accommodation : Mweya safari Lodge.

Day 10 : Game drives and boat trip on Kazinga Channel.

After breakfast, you will go for a game drive and visit schools in Kasenyi. You will return to the camp for lunch. After lunch, in the afternoon you will take the launch trip on the Kazinga channel which takes 2 hours.

The Kazinga channel is a natural channel of 36 km long between Lake George and Lake Edward. The launch trip is the most popular activity at Mweya. From the safe boat you can see elephants, hippo, Nile crocodiles on the banks of the channel, monitor lizards and many water birds like African skimmers, African fish eagles, cormorants, saddle-billed storks, pelicans, etc.

Activity: Game drive and Boat trip on Kazinga Channel.

Lodge accommodation : Mweya safari Lodge.

Day 11 : Game drive and visit Maramagambo Forest.

After breakfast, you will go for another short game drive, this time to concetrate more on animals that you missed on day 9. After a short game drive you will be transfered to Maramagambo Forest. You will have a picnic lunch on route. While in Maramagambo, you will do Forest walk, bat cave visit (bring a torch with you) and hunter's caves (with a chance of viewing some primates, rock python, birds & other wild game animals). After a visit to Maramagambo forest, you will be transfered to Ishasha. Dinner & Overnight is foreseen at Ishasha.

Activity: Game viewing, Maramagambo forest walk.

Camping accommodation : Ishasha campsite.

Lodge accommodation : Ishasha Wilderness Camp.

12 : Ishasha – Transfer to Bwindi.

After breakfast you will explore Ishasha for more wildlife viewing. This will expose you to a variety of wild animals. These include: Elephants, herds of buffalos, Cobs and Topis. Near to the swamps of the southern circuit you might see even leopard. We continue and drive to the northern circuit to concentrate more on the tree climbing lions. After an initial scouting expedition, we return to the camp for lunch. In the afternoon you will be transferred to Bwindi.

Activities: Game viewing.

Camping Accommodation: Bwindi Community Campsite.

Banda Accommodation: Buhoma Community Bandas.

Day13: Optional Gorilla Trekking or Bird Watching - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP is a natural rain forest that has beautiful scenery for trekkers. Here you will be required to report to the Park headquarters for briefing for Gorilla trekking at 7h00 am. Gorilla trekking is un predictable, it can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorilla group you have been given. A good physical condition is recommended. For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour. A ranger will brief you on how to behave with the gorillas. You will go with a picnic lunch when trekking the gorillas. If time allows you will be able to visit the local schools also.

Activities: Optional Gorilla trekking (permit to be paid and booked in advance) or bird watching.

Day 14: Bwindi – Forest Walk searching for Chameleons.

After breakfast, you will go for the forest walk to search for Chameleons, snakes, and other species. In the afternoon, you will visit Buhoma Primary school, CTPH and the medical centre. Overnight is foreseen at Buhoma Community Camp.

Activities: Forest Walk, visit Buhoma Community Medical centre, school and CTPH.

Camping Accommodation: Buhoma Community Campsite.

Banda Accommodation: Buhoma Community Bandas.

Day 15: Bwindi – Transfer to Lake Mburo NP

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park in Mbarara. This journey takes about 4 -5 hours. You will have lunch on the way. In the afternoon you will go for the boat trip and there after relax at the camp and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the national park. Overnight will be foreseen at Lake Mburo NP Camp.

Activities: Boat trip and scenery viewing.

Camping Accommodation: Lake Mburo Campsite.

Lodge Accommodation: Mihingo Lodge.

Day 16: Lake Mburo NP – Transfer to Kampala.

In the morning you have breakfast and the go for a nature walk. Here you will be able to see Zebras, buffalos, elephants and other wide varieties of wild animals.

After lunch, you will proceed to Kampala. An overnight will be foreseen at Nabinonya Beach Campsite.

Activities: Nature walk and Game viewing.

Camping Accommodation: Nabinonya Beach Campsite.

Lodge Accommodation: Sophie's Motel

Day 17: Departure.

For flight departing in the morning, you will be transferred to Entebbe Airport for departure. However, if you plan to go with an evening flight, then you will do a Kampala city tour, Kasubi Tombs and the craft markets.

Activities: Kampala city visit, crafts markets, the cultural sites.

Important Points to note:

- Gorilla permits must be booked 6 months in advance.

- We always advise our clients to bring soft or leather bags for easy transfers.

- Minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

- We advise you to carry enough money (proxy $500) to meet your personal expenses while here on safari.

- Tips are always given as a way of appreciating for the service provided. It is always given to the tour leader who shares it to the team.

- This safari can be extended to Rwanda for further experiences in a different environment especially gorilla trekking and cultural setting of Rwandese Communities.
