Elgon Safaris -8 days

This is a lodging/camping safari for individuals interested in walking to Wagagai the peak of Mountain Elgon. Hikers must be reasonably fit. Mountian Elgon can be climbed at any time of the year. The most favourable months are November and December given the fact that this is when the highland flowers are in bloom. The most popular destination on Mt. Elgon is the Sipi Falls where the Sipi River rises on the upper slopes of Mt. Elgon before gushing down the foothill to form a series of four pretty waterfalls culminating in a 99m drop at an altitude of 1,775m outside the small trading centre of Sipi. The Sipi are 60km from Mbale by Road.

This safari can be organized with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 10 participants. This safari can also be organized for family groups. Visa for Uganda is $ 50 Dollars person given any entry point of the country.

Trip summary:

Day 01: Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

Day 02: Transfer to Mbale via Jinja – Source of Nile and Bujjagali.

Day 03: Transfer to Mountain Elgon – walk to the Sipi falls.

Day 04: Hike Sipi Falls to Piswa Camp.

Day 05: Hike Piswa to Hunters Cave.

Day 06: Hike Hunters Cave – Wagagai peak - Mude Camp.

Day 07: Hike Mude – Budadiri – Mbale.

Day 08: Mbale – Kampala and Departure.

What is included on this trip?

Airport transfers, Lodge/camping accommodation, all meals, mineral water, the services of a Driver-Guide, all park and entry fees, all activities as per the itinerary: walking activities, visit of Jinja Town, source of River Nile, Bujjagali falls, visiting Sipi falls and Mabira forest.

What is excluded in this trip?

Personal expenses, visas, flight charges, all drinks except mineral water, tips and donations.

Day 1. Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

Arrival at Entebbe airport and transfer to the hotel. If you arrive early, you can have an optional visit to the Entebbe Education centre and the Botanical gardens or Kampala city visit. Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel.

Accommodation: Metropole Hotel or Airport Guest House.

Day 2 Kampala – transfer to Mbale.

After breakfast you will be transferred to Mbale via Jinja town. Jinja is popularly known as the industrial Centre. It is Jinja that harbours the Hydro Electric Power station that serves the country with electricity. A visit to the source of River Nile and the Bujjagali Falls makes your day. After lunch, continue to Mbale situated along a low ridge at the foot of a volcanic mountain - Mt. Nkokonjeru, which is part of the waterfalls, combined with the evergreen cultivated slope forms a very attractive background that captures your attention. Dinner and overnight at Mbale resort.

Accommodation: Mbale Resort hotel.

Day 3- Mbale – transfer to Sipi falls.

After early breakfast, you will be transferred to Sipi falls. After lunch, hike to the falls and return to your lodge or camp next to Sipi Falls for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Sipi River Lodge.

Day 4 – Sipi Falls – Piswa camp (2850M).

Take breakfast and then resume the hike following the Kapkwata Trail. A scenic hike through the bamboo, heath and moorland gets you to the Piswa camp at 2850 meters. You will have lunch and dinner in the mountains.

Accommodation: Piswa Camp.

Day 5 – Piswa Camp - Hunters cave (3581M).

Trek up to the verge of the calderas through beautiful columns of Lobelia Elgonensis. Visit Hot Springs and Suam Gorge before descending to the hunters cave Camp 3850m.

Accommodation: Hunters Cave.

Day 6: Hunters Cave – Wagagai Peak (4321M) – Mude cave camp (3500M).

Leave early pass huge rock out crops ascend the crater rim up to the caldera. Birders may catch a sight of Lammergeyer Vulture or the rare Jacksons francolin. You now pass through Giant Groundsels and over rocks to the summit of Wagagai peak (4321metres). From the peak, to the north and east, you can see the whole expanse of the crater and its peaks, while to the south and west the broad valleys drop away to the forest and plains far below. Descend thereafter through the Jackson summit and the Jackson pool to overnight at Mude Camp 3500m.

Accommodation: Mude Cave camp.

Day 7 – Mude camp – transfer to Budadri – Mbale.

After breakfast, descend through the Sasa trail to Budadiri then travel to Mbale town.

Accommodation: Mbale resort.

Day 8 - Transfer to Kampala via Mabira Forest and Departure.

Leave Mbale town for Kampala via Mabira forest. On This journey takes about 5 to six hours.
