Gorilla Camping Safaris -12 days

Uganda camping gorilla safari - 12 days

This is a camping program/safari for individuals interested in Camping and viewing the beauty of western Uganda. It involves a lot of activities included but not limited to chimp trekking, Gorilla trekking, game viewing and lunch trips. This trip can extended to other areas to view more interesting areas in Uganda.

This safari can be organized with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 15 participants. We also organise revised itineraries for families according to their interests. Please inquire for information about such programs.

Trip summary:

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

Day 2: Transfer to Kibale National park

Day 3: Chimp trekking – Transfer to Mweya (QENP)

Day 4: Game drives – Boat trip (QENP).

Day 6: Kyambura gorge – Transfer to Ishasha (QENP)

Day 7: Game Drives – Ishasha (QENP)

Day 10: Bwindi – Transfer to Lake Mburo NP.

Day 11: Lake Mburo – transfer to Kampala.

Day 12: Kampala visit and Departure.

What is included on this trip?

Airport transfers, camping accommodation, all meals, mineral water, the services of a Driver-Guide, all park and entry fees, all activities as per the itinerary: chimp trekking at Kibale, game drives at Mweya, boat trip on the Kazinga channel, visit of Kasenyi fishing village and salt works, nature walk in Kyambura in search of the chimps, game drives in Ishasha, gorilla trekking in Bwindi, game drives in Lake Mburo NP, Kampala visit.

What is excluded in this trip?

Personal expenses, visas, flight charges, all drinks except Mineral Water and other personal expenditures like tips and donations.

What to bring on safari?

Clothes that are friendly to wildlife observation, good walking shoes, a few long-sleeve shirts, slippers, a sweater for cool evenings, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sun cream, video/photo camera i.e. longer telelens is very useful, reserve batteries, films, binoculars and a torch dark nights.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

On arrival at Entebbe airport you will be received by AJ tours and travel team. Here you will be transferred to Nabinonya beach for an overnight. If you arrive in the morning, you may choose an activity/ day excursion that you will do outside the safari plan. This will enable you to keep busy that whole day before the safari departure on the following day.

Activities/ day excursion that you can choose include; a visit to Ngamba Island (Chimp sanctuary), visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, visit the Botanical Gardens, visit to Mabira Forest reserve (Nature walk and birding).

Accommodation: Nabinonya Campsite.

Day 2: Kampala - Transfer to Kibale.

After breakfast, we will drive to Kibale National Park via Mubende with a stop over at Fort Portal Town. Departure will be at 8h00 am. You will have lunch in Fort Portal town. After lunch we proceed to Kibale Forest National Park. An overnight is foreseen at Kibale NP. Overnight at Kibale Campsite.

Accommodation: Kibale Campsite.

Day 3: Kibale NP – Queen Elizabeth NP (Mweya).

After breakfast you will depart to the forest searching for Chimpanzees. Here your guides will brief you of all the activities to be done in the forest. The forest is a paradise of many species of birds, chimps, Baboons and white Colobus monkeys. After Chimp trekking you return to the camp for lunch. After lunch you will be transferred to Queen Elizabeth National Park (Mweya). Overnight is foreseen at Mweya Campsite.

Activity: Chimp trekking, bird watching and other small primates, natures walk

Accommodation: Mweya Campsite.

Day 4: Mweya Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Early morning you will go for a morning game drive since it is the most favourable time for Game viewing. Among the many activities includes visiting the Kob mating ground where a large number of the Uganda Kobs converge, visit of Kasenyi village and the schools. In this area you will enjoy a wide range of animals including lions, Kobs, Elephants, Buffalos, warthogs, bushbuck and waterbuck. You will return to the campsite for Lunch.

After lunch you will go for a launch trip to Kazinga channel. The Kazinga Channel is a natural channel of 36 km long between Lake George and Lake Edward. You will be able to see elephants, hippo, Nile crocodile and many water birds. The water birds are plentiful along the channel: African skimmers, African fish eagles, cormorants, saddle-billed storks, pelicans, etc. The Kazinga Channel divides Queen Elizabeth in a northern (Mweya) and southern part (Maramagambo, Kyambura, and Ishasha). Landscapes will be different. The northern part is a euphorbia savannah while the southern sector is a typical acacia savannah.

Activities: Game viewing, boat trip and visit of school.

Day 5: Mweya Queen Elizabeth NP.

Queen Elizabeth NP is divided into section. This time you will visit the Northern section of the park. This will include a visit to Katwe Salt walks, visit the crater lakes. After this exciting expedition you will proceed for a further short game drive and then return to the camp for Lunch.

After Lunch, you will be transferred to Maramagambo Forest. Here you will enjoy the forest guided nature walks and thereafter transfer to the bat cave to observe the fruit bats and rock Python. On the way back you will visit the small lake, the blue lake and the sometime get to see the giant forest warthog.

Activities: Game viewing, Katwe salt works and crater lakes and the bat cave.

Day 6: Kyambura – Transfer to Ishasha (QENP)

Wake up early in the morning and have breakfast. After breakfast you will be transferred to Kyambura. Here, you will explore Kyambura gorge. You will be briefed and guided by the guides before proceeding to trek the chimps since they know more about their sites. The nature walk takes a few hours and a picnic lunch will be served before heading to Ishasha. After lunch you will be transferred to Ishasha.

Activities: Chimpanzee trekking, Guided nature walks & hikes, wildlife viewing.

Accommodation: Ishasha Campsite.

Day 7: Ishasha - Queen Elizabeth NP

After breakfast you will explore the southern part of Queen Elizabeth NP. This will expose you to a variety of wild animals. These include: Elephants, herds of buffalos, Cobs and Topis. Near to the swamps of the southern circuit you might see even leopard. We continue and drive to the northern circuit which is the area near the main road known for its tree climbing lions. We look particularly at the many trees where lions like to stay. But we also visit the Uganda kob mating ground which is their preferred hunting area.

After an initial scouting expedition, we return to the camp for lunch and there after relax. In the afternoon you will go for another game drive.

Day 8: Ishasha – Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP

Before we depart for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP, we shall go for the last game drive in Ishasha. Here you might get a chance to see animals that you missed during the previous game drives. You will return to the hotel for lunch and thereafter transfer to Bwindi. The journey from Ishasha to Bwindi takes about 2 hours. Overnight will be foreseen at Bwindi – Buhoma.

Activities: Game viewing.

Accommodation: Buhoma Community Campsite.

Day 9: Gorilla Trekking - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP is a natural rain forest that has beautiful scenery for trekkers. Here you will be required to report to the Park headquarters for briefing for Gorilla trekking at 7h00 am. Gorilla trekking is un predictable, it can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorilla group you have been given. A good physical condition is recommended. For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour. A ranger will brief you on how to behave with the gorillas. You will go with a picnic lunch when trekking the gorillas.

After Gorilla trekking, you will be entertained by the orphans from Buhoma Community. Here you can donate anything that you have for the orphans since they are a poor community. If time allows you will be able to visit the local schools also.

Day 10: Bwindi – Transfer to Lake Mburo NP

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park in Mbarara. This journey takes about 4 hours. You will have a picnic lunch on the way. In the afternoon you will relax at the camp and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the national park. Overnight will be foreseen at Lake Mburo NP Camp.

Activities: Game viewing

Accommodation: Lake Mburo Campsite.

Day 11: Lake Mburo NP – Transfer to Kampala.

In the morning you have breakfast and the go for a morning game drive. Here you will be able to see Zebras, buffalos, elephants and other wide varieties of wild animals. After lunch, you will proceed to Kampala. An overnight will be foreseen at Nabinonya Beach Campsite.

Activities: Game viewing.

Accommodation: Nabinonya Beach Campsite.

Day 12: Departure.

For flight departing in the morning, you will be transferred to Entebbe Airport for departure. However, those having evening flights, will do a Kampala city tour, Kasubi Tombs and the craft markets.

Activities: Kampala city visit, crafts markets and the cultural sites.

Important Points to note:

We always advise our clients to bring soft or leather bags for easy transfers.

Minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

We advise you to carry enough money (proxy $400) to meet your personal expenses while here on safari.

Tips are always given as a way of appreciating for the service provided. It is always given to the tour leader who shares it to the whole group.

This safari can be extended to Murchison Falls NP and Rwanda for further experiences in a different environment especially gorilla trekking and cultural setting of Rwandese Communities.
