On the way to Butare, you will visit Nyanza the former Mwami (King) palace. The palace was reconstructed and very beautiful.

In Butare you will have a visit to the famous national dance "The Intore Dancers". This is the best dance an individual would like to see before you depart Rwanda. This 'Dance of Heroes' is performed by men wearing grass wigs and carrying spears. The background is a dance performed by returning warriors, celebrating victory in battle. The "Intore", once the elite of the traditional Rwanda army, were not only trained as military but also in high jump and dance. They were known for there remarkable technique allowing them to jump over 2m40. The Intore became worldwide famous as dancers in 1958 when the World Expo was held in Brussels. Today Intore dancers are part of the rich Rwanda folklore.

You will also visit National Museum which is regarded as the best Museum in East Africa. The building is displayed with monochrome pictures, traditional tools, crafts wood carvings and basketry. Rwanda has one of the finest traditional handicrafts of Africa. Over night is foreseen at hotel Ibis.

Accommodation: Hotel Ibis.

Day 4. Butare – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest NP.

This is a home of hikers and bird viewing. Nyungwe National Park is the largest block of montane forest in East or Central Africa, and one of the most ancient, dating back to before the last Ice Age. A uniquely rich centre of floral diversity, the forest has more than 200 different types of tree, and a myriad of flowering plants including the other-worldly giant lobelia and a host of colourful orchids.

Nyungwe is most alluring for its primates: 13 species in all, including human kind's closest living relative the chimpanzee, and hundred-strong troops of the delightfully acrobatic Angola Colobus monkeys. This park has almost 300 bird species of which two dozen are restricted to a handful of montane forests on the Albertine Rift. Overnight is foreseen at Nyungwe Guest House or Cyangugu.

Accommodation: Gisakura Guest House.

Day 5. Nyungwe Forest NP – transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park – DRC Congo.

After breakfast, you will enjoy chimpanzee tracking under the canopy of majestic trees. Chimpanzees (pan troglodyte Schweinfurt) are considered great apes, just like gorillas. Depending on the season, the steep slopes with thick vegetation can be wet. Chimps are far more mobile and elusive than gorillas. You may need 3 to 4 hours to approach this often exuberant primate. After lunch drive through extensive tea plantations to Cyangugu, a small harbour on Lake Kivu and cross Rusizi River to Bukavu town in the DR-Congo.

Accommodation: Orchids' Safari Club.

Day 6. Eastern Low Land Gorilla

After breakfast you will go for Eastern Lowland Gorilla Tracking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This park was named a world heritage in 1980 and founded in 1939 almost the same time as Virunga National Parl. A vast area of primary tropical forest is dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega. There are groups of eastern lowland gorillas consisting of only 250 individuals living at between 2100m and 2400 m above the sea-level. Eastern lowland has black coats, and the males develop silver backs as they mature. With the help of a ranger and trackers, we approach these rare primates. The walk can take several hours, but coming across the group in its particular habitat is an inspiring moment. After tracking, you will be back to Kahuzi Biega.

Accommodation: Orchids' Safari Club.

Day 7. Kahuzi Biega – transfer to Rwanda - Kibuye.

After breakfast you will leave for Kibuye passing through the green tea plantations before you explore the shores of Lake Kivu. The green vegetation along the road near the lake with hills and mountain offers a splendid view of the Islands and Villages. You will reach Kibuye town at around lunch time and you have lunch. After lunch you will relax the whole evening on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Accommodation. Bethany Guest House or Moriah Hill Hotel.

Day 8. Kibuye – Gisenyi by speed boat - Kinigi

After breakfast you will be transferred to Gisenyi by speed boat. This is one of the most enjoyable trip on the fresh waters of Lake Kivu. Lunch is foreseen at Gisenyi.

After lunch you will relax at Lake Kivu and late visit Gisenyi town. Dinner and overnight is foreseen at Serena Lake Kivu Hotel.
