Gorilla Congo Safari - 5 Days:

This is a lodging safari for individuals interested in discovering the recent erupted Nyiragongo Volcano (3470M) and Gorillas of Congo at Bukima Virunga National park. It involves hiking to the volcano and staying an overnight at top of the volcano.

The Nyiragongo Volcano, situated 20kms/12miles north of Goma, is one of Africa's most active volcanoes. The hike to the summit (alt. 3,470m/10,410ft) involves walking through lush forest and lava fields to reach the edge of a 1.2km/0.7miles wide crater and a magnificent lava lake.

Gorilla trekking from Congo is another beautiful experience compared to Rwanda and Uganda. Gorilla Tracking in Congo takes place in different gorilla groups that have been habituated in the Virunga National Park. These include Jomba: KWITONDA group (8 visitors), MAPUA group (8 visitors) Bikenge - RUGENDO group (6 visitors), Bukima - KABIRIZI group (8 visitors) MUNYAGA group (6 visitors), HUMBA group (8 visitors). This safari can be organized with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 10 participants. Visa for Rwanda $ 30 and Congo is also $ 80 dollars person.

Trip summary:

Day 01: Arrival at Kigali – transfer to Goma.

Day 02: Gorilla trekking at Bukima.

Day 03: Visit Goma and hike Nyiragongo Volcano.

Day 04: Descend back to Kibati and transfer to Rwanda Lake Kivu.

Day 05: Transfer to Kigali, city visit and Departure.

What is included on this trip?

Airport transfers, Lodge accommodation, all meals, mineral water, the services of a Driver-Guide, all park and entry fees, all activities as per the itinerary: Gorilla trekking, Hike Nyiragongo Volcano, visit of Goma town, visit to the green lake, relaxing on Lake Kivu and Kigali visit including the Genocide Memorial Centre at Gisozi.

What is excluded in this trip?

Personal expenses, visas, flight charges, other personal expenses like tips and donations, all drinks except mineral water.

Detailed Itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival to Kigali Airport and Transfer to Goma.

Arrival at Kigali International Airport. Pick up and transfer to Goma in DRC. Overnight at Hotel Ihusi or Mbiza hotel.

Day 2: Bukima Gorilla trekking.

After breakfast, you go for Gorilla tracking in Bukima sector park Nationale de Virunga (former Albert cook National Park). Leave early morning from the hotel heading to Bukima and arriving at around 8:45 at the park. After briefing, gorilla tracking starts by 9:30am latest. Tracking can last a maximum of 6hrs and thereafter return to Goma at the hotel. Dinner and Overnight at Hotel Ihusi or Mbiza hotel. (One of the Hotels on Lake Kivu).

Day 3: Goma visit and a hike to Nyiragongo Volcano.

Early morning after breakfast you will be taken around Goma, visit to the green lakes in Sake about 15km from Goma town. You will see how lava covered almost half of the town in 2002. By 10:00 am, you will be driven to Kibati the base of Mt. Nyiragongo one of the active volcanoes. Once at the base, you will be briefed and by 10:30am you will start your trek to the volcano. Nyiragongo is 3470m and it takes between 5 to 6 hrs to get to the top. At the top, it's all camping and a field pit latrine for nature's call. At night, you will be able to see the boiling magma and take good pictures. Overnight Camping at the top of the volcano

Day 4: Nyiragongo – transfer back to Goma.

Early morning, you descend at the base at Kibati by 10:00am .You will be picked at Kibati and transfer to the hotel for lunch. After lunch we shall cross to Gisenyi in Rwanda and relax at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel beach (with a beautiful view of Lake Kivu). Dinner and overnight at Serena Lake Kivu.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali and Departure.

Early morning after breakfast, travel back to Kigali for onward flight. While in Kigali, you can visit the Genocide memorial site depending on your flight schedule or stay one extra day and enjoy the beauty of Kigali one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

Important points to note on this safari.

1. The Nyiragongo and neighbouring Nyamulagira volcanoes are responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions.

2. The last major eruption of the Nyiragongo was in January 2002; over 400,000 people were evacuated from the city

3. This safari can be extended to Uganda for another gorilla experience.

4. We always advise our clients to bring soft or leather bags for easy transfers.

5. Minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

6. We advise clients to carry enough money (approximately $400) to meet their personal expenses while on safari.

7. Tips are always given as a way of appreciating the service provided to the tour leader.

8. Please note that there are daily flights from Nairobi to Kigali with Kenya Airways and Rwandair Express.

What to bring on safari?

Clothes that are friendly to wildlife observation, good walking shoes, a few long-sleeve shirts, slippers, sweater for cool evenings, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sun cream, video/photo camera i.e. longer telelens is very useful, reserve batteries, films, binoculars and a torch for dark nights.
