Discover Eastern Congo Safari

This is a lodging safari for persons interested in discovering the potentials of Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Beni, Epullu, Mambasa, Ituri Forest, Mavivi and the northern sector of Virunga National Park. It gives a lot as regards animals, plants, forest and culture is concerned.

This safari can be organized with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 10 participants. This safari can also be organized for family groups.

We advise clients to get visas for Congo from the respective embassies.

Visa for Congo is $ 80 dollars person.

Please note that accommodation is Congo is not well developed as in Uganda and Rwanda since the country has been at war for a long time.

Day 01: Arrival at Entebbe.

Day 02: Transfer to Fort Portal

Day 03: Transfer to Congo - Beni via Kasindi Boarder.

Day 04: Visit the Pygmies in Mavivi (Culture).

Day 05: Transfer to Epullu.

Day 06: Visit the Okapi – forest walk.

Day 07: Transfer to Beni.

Day 08: Visit Muchora and Ishango NP.

Day 09: Transfer to Uganda – Fort Portal.

Day 10: Transfer to Kampala and Departure.

What is included in this Trip:

All Meals while on safari, Lodge Accommodation, Airport transfers, and activities as per the program: visit the Pygmies, boat trip, visiting of areas like Beni town, Epullu village, visit of Beni town, Guided Forest Walk in Ituri Forest, visit the Okapi conservation Project in Epullu (the only place which has Okapi in the wild in the whole world), visit the Northern part of Virunga National Park i.e. Ishango and Muchora.

What is excluded in this trip:

Personal expenses, visas, flight charges, all drinks except Mineral Water and other personal expenditures like tips and donations.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport.

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport you will be received by AJ tours and travel team. Here you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight.

Accommodation: Sophie's Motel.

Day 2: Transfer to Fort Portal.

After breakfast you will be transferred to Fort Portal. This will enable us ease boarder formalities as early as possible for a departure to Congo- Beni on the second day. On your way to Fortal Portal you will able to view the beautiful sceneries of Western Uganda. You will pass via Mityana, Mubende, Kyenjojo And then Fort Portal. An overnight will be foreseen at Mountain of the Moon Hotel.

Activity: Day drive while viewing mountains, Plantations and people.

Accommodation: Mountains of the Moon hotel.

Day 3: Fort Portal – Transfer to Kasese – Congo.

The transfer to from to Fortportal to Kasese – Kasindi (the boarder of Uganda and Congo) takes about 2 hours. After settling all the boarder clearance, then we will proceed inside DRC. While moving in the car you will view the beautiful Land scape of Rwenzori Mountains. On a good day you view the glaciers at the peak of Magherite. Overnight will be fore seen at Beni town – Hotel Beni.

Activity: View of Mountain Rwenzori, Discovering the virgin Rain forest of Congo.

Day 4: Beni – Transfer to Mavivi.

After Breakfast, you will be transferred to Mavivi village to meet pygmies. Different activities will take place with pygmies. These will include, pygmy hunting, dancing and drama, sharing the experiences of the pygmy culture. This is a very good experience which an individual would not like to miss in life. The lyrics of Pygmy music are very fantastic and we sure you will end up joining the dance. After all the activities, you will return to the Hotel for Lunch and relax in the evening in Beni Town.

Activity: Visiting the pygmy group and visiting of Hotel Beni.

Accommodation: Hotel Beni.

Day 5: Beni – Transfer to Epullu.

Wake up early in the morning for a departure to Epullu Ituri Forest. This is a day drive from Beni considering the road situation in Congo. The journey to Epulu involves a lot of activities to see while traveling. These will include the forests, various land use like deforestation for charcoal, village photo and recording. We will have a picnic lunch at Mambasa trading centre before proceeding to Epullu. We will have stop over at the major rivers like River Epullu. This is such a big river with a big river flow similar to that of the River Nile. Overnight and dinner will be at the Okapi Conservation reserve.

Activity: Discover of River Epullu and Forest sceneries.

Day 6: Epullu Ituri Forest.

After breakfast, you will visit the Okapis (Okapia Johnstoni). The Reserve harbors okapi and many other rainforest species including chimpanzees, elephants, hornbills and 13 species of monkeys. Found only in the Congo, the okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is a shy and reclusive forest dweller and is the only living relative of the giraffe. Its unusual coloration and markings, including stripes resembling a zebra, provide camouflage in the dense rainforest and protect it from predators. The okapi is so quiet and elusive that the indigenous people of the forest rarely see one.

After lunch you will visit the pygmy from Epullu who live in a totally different experience. This will enable you to compare the two pygmy groups. After this visit, you go for a guided a forest walk in Epullu Forest which consists of so many plant species and small animals (Rodents). After the forest walk you return to the Okapi Conservation Centre for a camp fire before you go to sleep. Dinner will be served there.

Activity: Visit the Okapis; Visit the Pygmy, Guided Forest Walk. Bird watching

Accommodation: Epullu Bandas.

Day 7: Epullu Transfer to Beni.

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Beni. This journey takes about 8 hours depending on the nature of the road. This drive is very enjoyable as there is a lot to see while traveling. A picnic lunch will served on the way to Beni.

Activity: Day drive, forest viewing.

Accommodation: Hotel Beni.

Day 8: Transfer from Beni to Muchora and Ishango- Northern Sector of Virunga National Park.

Here you will depart Hotel Beni after breakfast and transfer to Muchora. Muchora is the headquarters of Virunga National Park the Northern sector. You will be guided by park officials as they explain measures they have put in place to bring back tourism to its nature. A well developed network of security personnel to monitor and patrol the National parks has been strengthened by the European Union with the help of Congolese Government. In the afternoon you will be transferred to Ishango and a guided nature walk in the national park is foreseen. Animals to see include the kobs, the hippos on River Semliki and Elephants.

Activity: Nature walk, Guided forest walk and Game viewing

Accommodation: Ishango Bandas.

Day 9: Ishango – Transfer to Fort Portal (Uganda)

After breakfast you will go for a Lunch on river Semliki. This is a habitant of Hippos, Crocodiles and so many bird species. This is also a home for birders. After the lunch on river Semliki, you will return to the camp for Lunch and then transfer to Fort Portal. Overnight will be fore seen at Mountains of the Moon Hotel.

Activity: Lunch on river Semliki, Game viewing

Accommodation: Mountains on the Moon Hotel.

Day 10: Fort Portal – Transfer to Kampala and Departure.

A transfer from Fort Portal to Kampala takes about four to five hours. Upon your arrival in Kampala, you will have Lunch and then transfer to the Airport for Departure.
