 Climbing Nyiragongo Safari – 4 days.

This is a lodge safari for individuals interested in hiking the Nyiragongo Volcano in Goma Congo and relax at Lake Kivu. It involves hiking to the active volcano, a visit to Goma, the green lake and relax on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Trip summary:

Day 01: Arrival at Kigali and transfer to Congo.

Day 02: Hike the Nyiragongo for an overnight.

Day 03: Transfer back to Goma – later to Gisenyi.

Day 04: Gisenyi – transfer to Kigali and Departure.

Activities: Hike Nyiragongo, Goma city visit, Kigali city visit including the Genocide Memorial centre.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1 – Arrival at Kigali – transfer to Goma Congo via Gisenyi.

Enjoy a beautiful drive through the land of a thousand hills to reach Gisenyi the largest port on Lake Kivu. After lunch clear customs at the boarder crossing and enter the Democratic Republic of Congo. Overnight at Goma.

Accommodation: Stella Matulina Lodge or Hotel Ihusi.

Day 2 – Hike Nyiragongo at a height of $ 3,470 for an overnight.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kibati visitors centre before hiking for briefing. Hike to the active volcano Nyiragongo. The 4-5 hours hike through lush rainforest takes you to the spot where the volcano erupted in 2002. Overnight at the volcano.

Accommodation: Tents.

Day 3 - Hike back wards to Goma and transfer to Rwanda.

You will descend to Goma and arrive at Kibati in the morning at 11 am. Transfer to Goma for lunch and later transfer to Gisenyi. You will also visit Goma town to see the impact of the 2002 eruption that left Goma resembling a modern day Pompeii with cars and houses trapped in the lava flow. Overnight is foreseen at Lake Kivu Serena.

Accommodation: Serena Lake Kivu.

Day 4: Lake Kivu - Transfer to Kigali.

You will be transferred to Kigali for Kigali visit and Departure and end of trip.

What to bring on safari?

Clothes that are friendly to wildlife observation, good walking shoes and gears for hiking, a few long-sleeve shirts, slippers, sweater for cool evenings, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sun cream, video/photo camera i.e. longer telelens is very useful, reserve batteries, films, binoculars and a torch for dark nights.
